The whole or part of a liver can be transplanted from a deceased donor, or part of a liver can be transplanted from a living donor. When only a section of the liver is transplanted, it is expected that the liver will grow to 85% of the size of the original liver within a week of transplantation.
What does the liver do?
The liver has many functions including:
• Breaking down food and changing it to energy as required by the body
• Removing waste products from the blood
• Fighting infections
Blood is delivered from the digestive system to the liver through the portal vein. Substances in the blood are processed and passed back into the blood or released into the intestines.
